Football once again took centre stage on this week’s show.

Non-League steps 3 and 4 resumed league action on Saturday.

And that meant talking about and tracking the progress of the considerable number of Essex non-League teams in three divisions of the Isthmian League as well as the Premier League, Championship and our two local sides in League Two of the EFL – where Southend United suffered another defeat away to Carlisle United, but also where Leyton Orient staged a fine late comeback to secure a point at home to Mansfield Town.

Local performance of the day in the semi-pro ranks came from Hullbridge Sports, who travelled to Witham Town for their Isthmian North opener and scored seven goals without reply.

But fellow North side Brentwood Town were not so fortunate, losing their first league match of 2020/21 at home to Grays Athletic who scored a 2-0 victory. My Phoenix colleague Andy Gardener did a sterling job of dashing across the Brentwood Centre car park to our studio at both half-time and full-time to give us details of the match.

Our man at New Lodge Leigh also kept us up to date on Billericay Town’s friendly against Maidstone United, and grabbed a post-match reaction from Billericay manager Jamie O’Hara for us.

Our other reporter Scott Lanza struck gold with what was arguably the pick of the FA Vase ties involving our local teams, as he told us all about Ilford’s exciting 5-3 victory over Long Melford.

I also kept tabs on a busy afternoon of horse racing, Rugby League Challenge Cup ties and provided a summary of the now finished Essex League Cricket season.

But as usual I also found time to play some quality music. Here is this week’s playlist:

Don Henley – The Boys Of Summer

Matt Johnson – Sunshine

New Order – Be A Rebel

Blanks – Favourite Nightmare

Doja Cat – Say So

Robert Palmer – Every Kinda People

Nu Projekt – It’s Only You

Johnny Hates Jazz – New Day Ahead

Michael Jackson – Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough

Billy Ocean – One World

Bon Jovi – Do What You Can

Andy Bell – Love Comes In Waves

Pretenders – Back On The Chain Gang

Laurel – Scream Drive Faster

Mojo Slide – Not In My Name

Motorhead – Ace Of Spades

July Talk – Governess Shadow

Status Quo – Ice In The Sun

Oscar Lang – Apple Juice

Travis feat Susanna Hoffs – The Only Thing

Teddy Pendergrass – Close The Door
