Foxes Firepower Wins Vase Classic

Ilford 5 Long Melford 3

Buildbase FA Vase 1st Qualifying Round

Saturday 19th September

There’s was a Vase classic served up at Cricklefield on Saturday as Ilford came back from behind to end up winning 5-3 thanks to a second half masterclass that saw them score three times in six minutes to put them firmly in the driving seat.

You had a feeling that this one was going to produce goals because Long Melford won a corner inside 30 seconds of the first whistle; and Ilford having had to defend that corner then launched their first attack that saw Juan Cardona volley over. The Thurlow Nunn side then duly went back up the other end and won another corner. No lack of action with only three minute on the clock.

There was then a lull in goalmouth action as the next chance didn’t materialise until the 10th minute when Callum Hemson attempted a volley which was blocked.

Hemson was involved in Long Melford’s next attack as he latched onto a cross from the left at the back post, firing off a volley which took a deflection of an Ilford player and went into the net.

The Foxes nearly found an instant equaliser when Dion Lewis-Kirwan sped past the Melford defence, but unfortunately his shot beat the keeper but clipped the post.

Ilford were however back on terms in the 20th minute when a long throw darted across the six-yard box and Lewis-Kirwan poked the ball home from close range.

Lewis-Kirwan had been unlucky moments before he struck gold, but he then fluffed a golden opportunity to take the lead when Matt Walker charged out of his box to clear a through ball, made a hash of it, with the loose ball then being struck well wide of the open goal by the Ilford striker.

Melford having been under the cosh a little bit then carved out another decent opportunity when Archie Pether had a long-range shot tipped round the post by Joshua Blackman. Both sides had pace up front meaning that the chances continued to come thick and fast. Dimitri Christou laid off Yemi Adelami who charged into the box and fired a shot into the side-netting.

Long Melford though had two very nippy wingers and they had the better of the action in the later periods of the half. On 37 minutes Hemson turned one player, then another, before cutting in and having a shot that hit Blackburn’s left-hand post. Pether had a shot deflected for a corner, then Jamie Griffith had a free kick saved by Blackburn. The half time whistle came at a time when the Foxes were having to withstand a bit of pressure

In the 49th minute a Melford attack was halted by Ben Tait who hustled Charlie Hamman off the ball – and from this Ilford then launched a stunning counter-attack. Hamman played a perfect pass to Christou who then charged forward, went past a number of Melford players, before drilling a shot past Walker to hand Ilford the lead.

Long Melford were level within two minutes as Kieran Michaels delivered a Beckhamesque free kick that crashed into the top left hand corner of the net.

With hardly any time for the spectators to catch their breath there was then another goal in the 53rd minute when Kirwan-Lewis rifled home to hand Ilford the lead once more. And then two minutes later the Foxes extended the lead even further when a free kick caused a little bit of six-yard box ping-pong before Bailey Hassock stabbed the ball home.

Ilford may well have demonstrated some clinical finishing inside those six minutes, but their opponents were still dangerous and Blackburn had to dive to his right to keep out another quality Michaels free kick. And Melford’s wingers were still trying to create chances when they could.

The hosts however extended their lead even further in the 68th minute when Yemi Adelami latched onto a ball, rounded the keeper and rolled the ball home. That surely would now put Long Melford down and in any cae Adelami nearly added another in the 75th minute.

The visitors then put together a three-pass move that ended when Griffiths cannoned a shot inches wide. There was still life in Long Melford and they then put their next chance away, which came via another Michaels free kick, which he dinked over Ilford wall and keeper to set up an interesting finale.

The final ten minutes saw both sides get crosses into the box, but there was to be a bit more niggle than goalmouth action- the previous eighty certainly made up for it and it was a truly great Vase encounter. Foxes in boxes seems to be Ilford’s motto at the moment and they may be about to embark on a Vase campaign if they can keep scoring as openly as this.

Scorers – Dion Kirwan-Lewis (20′, 53′), Dimitri Christou (49′), Bailey Hossack (55′), Yemi Adelami (68′).
