In football it was a day of celebration for Canvey-based National League South side Concord Rangers, who played their long-awaited FA Trophy semi-final at home to Halesowen Town and booked a place at Wembley for the first time in their history. The final will be played on Sunday 27th September.

With the Football League season commencing next weekend, our two local EFL sides were involved in the first round of the Carabao Cup. Leyton Orient progessed to the next stage, coming from behind to win 2-1 at Forest Green Rovers. But no such luck for Southend United, whose new manager Mark Molesley took charge for the first time but who saw his new charges exit the competition, as they lost 1-0 away to Gillingham of League One.

We also saw the return of the Essex Senior and Thurlow Nunn Leagues, and in the former, our reporter Scott Lanza was on the line to tell us about the 2-2 draw he watched between Redbridge and Saffron Walden Town.

In Cricket, there was no joy for Essex as they were beaten by Kent in a Vitality blast match at the Oval, which the Spitfires won by 29 runs.
