“Hooked on dodgy literature, that’s no defence”

Being a Tuesday Margaret Mills was back with me and this week was looking at someone in trouble with the law.

The individual concerned was, one George Wright, a 16 year old clerk from Ipswich who in May 1859 found himself in the dock charged with breaking into the house next door to where he lived, and stealing a gold watch.

It seems that his legal defence team were rather devoid of reasons for his actions, but claimed that these were due to his being lead astray by reading “lurid and sensational literature.”

Probably fairly common for anyone of his age, I would suspect.

Nevertheless he was sentenced to 4 months in prison with hard labour.

Anyway you can listen again here to what Margaret had to say on this subject: –

See you again next week I hope,
Scott
