Phoenix FM’s weekly cricket discussion show every Thursday 6-8pm with the usual round up of news, views and guests from around the cricketing world. We report on the results from the latest round of matches in the SNEL with cracking individual performances to talk about.
This week we are joined on the phone by Roland Butcher, the former Middlesex batsman and the first black player to appear for England. He tells us about his career from club cricket through to the international stage and a Test baptism of fire at his native Barbados facing the legendary West Indies bowling line up of Holding, Roberts, Marshall, Garner and Croft, as well discussing his views on the current state of world cricket.
Our other guest is former England opener Michael Carberry, who gave us a great insight on his successful county career at Surrey, Kent and Hampshire, what it was like opening the batting on the notorious 2013/14 Ashes tour Down Under and how he is currently enjoying a new vocation as a pencil artist. We also chat about his strong views on getting black kids back into cricket and hierarchical problems within sport in general. A really good listen!
Michael also took over the musical selection for this week’s show, playing some great tunes and if you want to see just how good his art is (and maybe buy a print or two) take a look here:
