Now here’s a proper excuse for speeding!

Have you ever been “done” for speeding?

Well here’s a “blinder” of an excuse and the driver concerned did indeed “get off”.

After spotting a vehicle hurtling down the highway, clearly breaking the speed limit, a police patrol vehicle in Australia, pulled it over, only to discover that the driver was engaged in a life and death struggle with a highly venomous snake.

The 27-year old driver, known only as Jimmy, became aware of the eastern brown snake, which is responsible for the majority of snake deaths in Australia, when it slid out through the gearstick column and started attacking him between his legs – nasty!

He started to brake but the more he moved his legs, the more the reptile wrapped itself around him. Whilst trying to stop the vehicle he used the seatbelt and a knife to try and fight it off.

Believing he might have been bitten, he hit the accelerator and headed for the nearest hospital. That’s when police caught up with him.

As soon as they saw the dead snake in the truck they called out the paramedics who determined that he had not been bitten, but was suffering from shock – as you would.

Police have confirmed that he will not be prosecuted either for speeding or for killing the snake, which is a protected creature in Queensland.

Moving on from a snake in Australia we returned closer to home to look at a side of bacon – “THE DUNMOW FLITCH” to be precise, which was the subject chosen this week by Margaret Mills.

This is actually a custom which dates back to the 12th century and since being revived in 1855, now takes place in Dunmow every leap year.

Listen again here to what Margaret had to say on this subject: –

I’ll see you again next week,
Scott
