Artist Feature: No1

We’ve been playing No1 a great deal here on Phoenix FM recently, and we had a chat to see all about the man and his music.

Tell us a little bit about your yourself?

I’m from Chicago. My artist name is No1. Translation would be (No One) The name No1 is derived from the song No Quarter by Led Zeppelin. “Picture the path where No One goes” is the lyric in the song. To me it was a cool line with great meaning. I always wanted my artistry to be a reflection of me creating my own path on this musical journey. In terms of my Hip Hop story… let’s just say it’s been a lot of hard work.

When did you first start to develop a passion for music?

My parents were my biggest influences. When I was kid my parents pushed me to be involved in many things and music was one of them. I wanted to try instruments like the Violin, Cello and Clarinet. Although I didn’t continue with those instruments I found a true love for Classical music. Fast forward…In terms of Hip Hop music… it’s been embedded in my youth and upbringing. From the time I was 18 years old visiting a Zulu Nation event in NY or progressing later to producing tracks for a number of Chicago artists… it’s been my passion.

Which artists did you listen to while growing up?

My parents would listen to The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Rolling Stones. I personally grew up with Tom Petty and loved artists such as Pink Floyd, Bob Marley, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. I grew up in the heart of the MTV era, so I was obsessed with Hip Hop artists like Tupac, Dr. Dre and Snoop.

How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard you before?

I think my sound is an alternative style of Hip Hop. I have just shy of four minutes to paint a picture musically and to write a story with my pen that I can blend to express vocally. I really try to give everything I have to each song. I would hope that by the time it gets to the listener they would say it sounds like No1 (No One) they’ve ever heard before (or at least.. that’s my goal).

What music have you recorded and released to date?

That’s a loaded question… but I would just encourage anyone to visit my SoundCloud to explore my catalog of songs. For now let’s focus on Blue Ocean which is my latest work.

Which artists do you enjoy listening to at the moment – and do they influence your work?

I’m kind of a throw back when it comes to my listening habits but let’s just say in the current that I like listening to Tony Bennett, Lady Gaga, Adele, Eminem, Jay-Z, Chris Stapleton, Kings Of Leon, the list goes on. In terms of inspiration… All artists of any kind influence me. Art at its core is the single most important thing in my mind to every culture and society. Therefore, all artists influence me.

Who would your dream collaboration be with?

I actually have a very very long list of artists so this is a very difficult question for me. In short, I’ve always dreamed of collaborating with with Plant and Page, Bob Dylan, Jimmy Lovine, Dr. Dre, Jay-Z, Adele, Alicia Keys and Lady Gaga.

What are your plans for the future?

To live my life as is. I will continue to make music when I’m able but only as it comes naturally. In time, if I’m fortunate enough to progress in the music world, I will humbly do so with those that support me. I’m thankful to share my art with the world. Thanks for listening!
