We heard today about a unique medical condition which could cause some issues to sufferers challenged for drink driving.
An unnamed 61-year old has become the first person in the world to be diagnosed with ‘urinary auto-brewery syndrome’ caused by yeast in her bladder fermenting sugar in her urine to produce alcohol, which results in her peeing alcohol without ever consuming a single drop!
The process is almost exactly the same as one used by beer makers (think I’ve had some beer from that brewery!) – but it was happening in her own body.
At first medics suspected she may have been hiding an alcohol addiction when urine tests for the drug repeatedly came back positive.
The woman who suffers from diabetes and cirrhosis of the liver had been recommended for a liver transplant, only to be taken off the waiting list and referred for alcohol abuse treatment instead, in spite of her denials.
It was only after blood tests for alcohol proved negative that her true condition was revealed.
Medics are now calling on doctors to be aware of the condition so other patients are not erroneously labelled alcoholics!
Since I’m known to enjoy the odd beer, I don’t think I could ever get away with that one!
