We’ve been playing out Rick Fusion’s new single “Like Solomon Said” on our recent Rising Stars show – and we caught up with Rick to chat about his life in music.

Hi Rick! Tell us a little bit about your yourself?

I was born in Jamaica and moved to the U.S. when I was about 14 years. I am the second of five siblings. I like a good laugh and love to hike, sight seeing, and chill at coffee shops with friends, while having a good talk. My passion is to mentor and help people. I have a strong belief in Christ and love to share that love. When I’m not doing music, I am employed as an acquisition professional.

When did you first start to develop a passion for music?

My passion developed while I was in Elementary School. I watched my elders play musical sound systems and competed with each other. That ignited a fire of music in my soul. I started singing on the children’s Sunday school choir, about 100 meters from where I lived at the time. I knew music was in my entire being. I began playing drums, imitating the sound of other musicians and the rest was history.

Which artists did you listen to while growing up?

Growing up, I listened to artists from all over. Jamaican acts such as Bob Marley, Bounty Killer, Papa San, Wayne Wonder, Beres Hammond to international starts such as Celine Dion, Michael Jackson, and Witney Huston.

How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard you before?

My style is focus on fusing a little Pop, Hip-Hop, Rap with Reggae. Thus, comes the name Rick Fusion. My music is positive and falls into Christian, positive lovers-rock, & life. No mater the message it will always be positive and down to earth. Anyone will be able to embrace a song from one or more of the categories.

What music have you recorded and released to date?

I have recorded 11 songs so far. I released eight of those songs: one EP album and three singles. The other four songs will be released next year with three Italian artists.

Which artists do you enjoy listening to at the moment – and do they influence your work?

I listen just about anyone with a positive vibes. Recently, I have been listening to Jermaine Edwards and Sherwin Gardner, from the Christian Reggae genre and, Dua Lipa, Alice Merton and Kahild. But overall I listen to just about anyone with a clean message.

Who would your dream collaboration be with?

Perhaps, Kanye West. I like his creativeness. Definitely Sherwin Gardner and Jermaine Edwards. Due Lipa sings on some cool beats or riddims…that could be a cool reggae pop colab.

What are your plans for the future?

To spread a message of hope and love to the world through music among other things.
