We’ve been playing out a few tracks from Detroit artist Jason Miller regularly here on Phoenix FM regularly – and we had a chat with Jason about his love of music and his inspirations.
Tell us a little bit about your yourself?
My name is Jason Miller and I’m gonna make music for everyone!
When did you first start to develop a passion for music?
I started playing keyboards at 5 years old, drums at 10 and trumpet at 13. I’ve dabbled in a bit of everything since them, especially MIDI devices and, of course, turntables.
Which artists did you listen to while growing up?
I liked electronic music from a early age – artists such as Moby, Crystal Method, Carl Craig and The Belleville 3.
How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard you before?
Random – a one man playlist! Basically I make any track that comes in my mind.
What music have you recorded and released to date?
Muses came out in 2016, then in 2017 we followed this with the mostly-trance Poundtown. In 2018 we released Accel – a lot of big room house and riddim, with future bass, kawaii bass, techno and synthwave. After this followed Break, See You Space Cowboy which was inspired by the anime Cowboy Bebop, and The Darkness which had a darkwave remix.
Which artists do you enjoy listening to at the moment – and do they influence your work?
Skrillex, DJ Chidow, YUC’e, TORIENA, Chase & Status, Shigeto, jvna, BABYMETAL, hadouken!, Mindless Self Indulgence, DJ Assault and Shabba Ranks. They don’t influence my work – cxcept the time I wrote “vagina” in a clear attempt to steal clout from DJ Assault (he wrote “ass and titties”).
Who would your dream collaboration be with?
Definitely YUC’e … the hype from an “future candy”/”accel saga” set will cause a big bang. Taylor Swift would be fine too.
What are your plans for the future?
You know, in the height of hubris the Street Fighter cabinets were marked simply “3” by Capcom, like “you know what it is” … they did Street Fighter alpha 1, 2, 3. A bunch of revisions to two. So suddenly there was a “3” in arcades. My next album’s gonna be “four”, whenever it is released.
