World Environment Day & One Hit Wonder World Cup Round 3

It was world environment day so we shared thoughts on what we could all do to protect the environment. Things like avoiding happy meals, sharing baths and “letting it mellow” were not for everyone but I think we all agreed that not producing plastic badges to promote the reduction of plastic was a good start.

Equally as important as saving our planet was the third round of our One Hit Wonder World Cup which saw Group C’s five tracks narrowed down to two. Xanthe Bearman, Phoenix FM’s 80’s expert, chose Berlin’s “Take My Breath Away” as this round’s Top Gun (geddit?!) naming the first of this round’s semifinalists.

The Twitter and Facebook vote for the remaining four was a tight race between Stealer’s Wheel’s “Stuck In The Middle With You” and Men Without Hats’ “The Safety Dance” that came down to one vote in the last minute. The Vapours’ “Turning Japanese” wound up in last place with 14% and Bram Van 3000’s “Drinking In LA” ranked 3rd with 21%. Twitter voters were in favour of Stealers Wheel but Facebookers backed Men Without Hats – combining the two scores proved as tough as the contest between them but with a vote 2 minutes before the closing of the polls clenching the win, you sent Men Without Hats doing “The Safety Dance” all the way to the semifinals.

Tomorrow, we’ll be allocating our last 2 semifinal spots in what looks like this tournament’s group of death – it’s going to be another tough contest from 3pm! You’ll be able to vote on Twitter @StewPink or @PhoenixFM and via the Phoenix FM Facebook page.

If you missed it, I’ll be putting together a mix of the best bits from my Drivetime cover on my regular podcast. Just search “Stewart Pink” whenever you get your podcasts from and if you’re a fan of my shows then be sure to tune in for my regular hangouts – I present The As Yet Untitled Rock Show every Tuesday from 10pm and The One2Three Show every Friday from 1pm.
