Bostik League – Saturday 27th April Round-Up

By JOHN CHUBB

@JohnCphoenixfm

The final day of the Bostik League season ended in heartache for Romford, who ended up finishing in the bottom two of the Bostik North and were therefore relegated, despite a 3-1 win over Felixstowe & Walton United.

As was the case towards the end of their last campaign, the Boro made a valiant attempt to stay up with some excellent results in the final month of the season and goals from Craig Jeakins, Joseph Chidyausiku and Jimmy Cox ensured a final day victory.

But sadly for Romford it was all in vain, as Witham Town win 2-0 at Basildon United thanks to goals from Coyle and Ashford which meant that Witham finished with the same points total, but made sure of survival due to their superior goal difference.

In the Bostik Premier League AFC Hornchurch ended their campaign in 15th place, having gained their 50th point of the season in a goalless draw at Lewes. Already relegated Harlow Town finished bottom of the league, in spite of finding the net three times at home to Margate through Scott Davies, Tom Hitchcock and Matt Foy. But a reply from Rogers and a Sho-Silva hat-trick ensured their Kent visitors ran out 4-3 winners.

Back in the Bostik North champions Bowers & Pitsea rounded off their successful campaign in style with a 3-1 home victory over Tilbury, who finished in 10th place. James Thomas, Jamie Dicks and David Knight were the scorers for Rob Small’s side with George Sykes netting the Dockers’ consolation.

Aveley secured the runners-up spot with an emphatic 4-0 win at home to Soham Town Rangers. Adam Bailey-Dennis fired the Millers in front after 19 minutes before Sam Bantick netted from the penalty spot just before half-time. After the break Tom Richardson made it 3-0, before Bantick added his second 18 minutes from the end.

In the play-off semi-finals Aveley will face Heybridge Swifts, who rounded off their league fixtures with a 2-1 victory at Bury Town. Jayden Randell and Evans Kouassi scored either side of Machaya’s equaliser for the home team.

Aveley’s win meant Maldon & Tiptree finished in third place, in spite of a thumping 7-1 victory over Barking at the Wallace Binder Ground. Percy Kiangebeni, Tariq Issa and Rob Girdlestone were on the scoresheet for Wayne Brown’s team, along with Eddie-Louis Dsane and Jorome Slew who each netted a brace. Nana Boakye-Yiadom replied for Barking, who ended the season in 12th position.

The Jammers face Coggeshall Town, who lost their final league game 1-0 at AFC Sudbury, in the other play-off semi-final.

Grays Athletic ended their campaign in 7th place and with a 3-0 victory away to already relegated bottom club Mildenhall Town, thanks to goals from Dennis Oli, Mitch Hahn and Michael Toner. There was also a final day victory for Canvey Island, who triumphed 3-1 at Brentwood Town and secured a final position of 9th, after a good run in their last few games. Ade Cole, Frankie Merrifield and Ryan Melaugh were on the scoresheet for the Gulls. Charlee Hughes netted for Brentwood, who ended the season in 13th place.

Great Wakering Rovers ended their first season back at step 4 in 15th place, but for manager Steve Butterworth – appointed permanently to the role last week – and his side it was a final day to forget, as they crashed to a 6-1 defeat away to Dereham Town. Wengrzik, Logan, Forshaw and Beaumont (who scored a hat-trick) were on the scoresheet for the Norfolk side, Wakering’s consolation coming via an own goal from Castellan.
