The type 1 diabetes charity, JDRF, is partnering with Ford Britain to bring the first Cycle for a Cure event to the UK on 18th May 2019.

This event provides the chance to cycle around the Ford test track and surrounding Essex countryside while helping to fund life-changing research to treat, prevent and cure type 1 diabetes.

Ford of Britain Chairman, Graham Hoare and Managing Director, Andy Barratt said:

“Ford is delighted to be working with JDRF on the 2019 Cycle for a Cure event. It is our hope that lots of people will get involved and help raise vital funds for the continued research this amazing organisation is doing to find a cure for type 1 diabetes.”

About the event

The event takes place at 8:00 am at Ford Dunton Technical Centre, Dunton, Essex SS15 6EE.

Adults can choose from two distances – 50 km or 100 km – that will both finish back at the Ford Dunton Technical Centre.

As well as the advanced and intermediate course for adults, there is also a child-friendly session on the Ford Dunton Test Track and lots of fun activities on the day.

There will also be the chance to WIN an exclusive ride in the new Ford GT used at Le Mans, a variety of Ford Heritage Vehicles on display, cycling related workshops and games for family and friends as well as a virtual reality experience from the Ford Share the Road team.

The Cycle for a Cure Event Village will provide entertainment, guest speakers, type 1 diabetes workshops and a variety of street food stalls for family members and friends. There will also be an award ceremony with different cycling jerseys for different winner categories.

About type 1 diabetes

  • Type 1 diabetes  is an autoimmune disease that can happen to anyone, regardless of family history and is not caused by diet or lifestyle choices
  • People with type 1 diabetes rely on multiple insulin injections or pump infusions every day just to stay alive, until we find the cure
  • Type 1 diabetes affects about 400,000 people in the UK, 29,000 of them are children
