How would you dispose of an insect?

What lengths would you go to to get rid of a large insect?

I ask that question for a reason because a man from Detroit ended up in hospital after he threw his sneaker at a cockroach.

How come I hear you say?

Well it seems that he had overlooked the revolver hidden inside the shoe, which on impact went off causing a bullet to strike him in the foot. The fate of the cockroach is unknown.

Amazingly this is not the first time that Detroit has witnessed injuries – and more – after people went to extreme lengths to get rid of insects.

In January 2016 a man tried to get rid of bedbugs infesting his furniture by burning them out. He doused the furniture with alcohol and lit a cigarette, which he used to try to burn one of the tiny bugs, but he ended up setting the couch and himself on fire. The incident also destroyed four apartment units and caused water damage in more than 20 other units.

And just a year earlier a woman named Sherry Young tried to use alcohol and fire to kill bed bugs, but ended up destroying the 48 unit apartment building.

Five people, including the woman and three firefighters, were rushed to the hospital.

Being a Tuesday Margaret Mills was on hand to tell us about some of the sporting activities for which Colchester was well known in the 18th century.
