NEWS THIS WEEK
1980 – Iron Maiden play their first gig with new guitarist Adrian Smith in Uxbridge. Despite little radio or television support Iron Maiden are considered one of the most successful heavy metal bands in history. The band won the Ivor Novello Award for international achievement in 2002.

1981 – While sitting in Tom’s Restaurant in New York City, Suzanne Vega composes the song “Tom’s Diner”.

1982 – The Jamaica World Music Festival is held in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Acts include The Clash, Grateful Dead, Aretha Franklin and Squeeze.
