Match report: Billericay Town 2 Taunton Town 2

Billericay Town and Taunton played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in their FA Cup 4th Qualification round tie. The home side led twice through first half strikes from in-form striker, Moses Emmanuel but were pegged back both times within four minutes. Andrew “Rocky” Neal and Matt Buse were on target for the visitors.

Despite controlling large chunks of the match, Blues were unable to finish off the Peacocks. A missed second half penalty by Matt Wright for the visitors proved to be an almighty let off. A relieved Billericay Town get a second chance to seal passage into the prestigious first round via a replay next Wednesday at Taunton.

With hindsight, three new faces introduced into the Blues first X1 – including Nottingham Forest youngsters, Ethan Stewart and Joe Coveney – was too ambitious a selection to take on an experienced and seasoned Taunton outfit. Changes were enacted during the game by manger Dean Brennan to improve the blend. Team adjustments for the mid-week re-match can also be expected.

In autumn sunshine, Billericay started the match strongly with attacking intent. Full of enterprise on the right hand side, Alfie Potter and Joe Kizzi regularly linked up to deliver attacking crosses. To their credit, Taunton’s left back Nuno Felix and central defensive cover, Brett Trowbridge, combined well to counter the danger. Well organised at the back, the Peacocks maintained good shape in coach Rob Dray’s 3-5-2 set-up as a vociferous travelling support watched on.

With leading goal-scorer, Jake Robinson, unavailable for selection due to injury, Billericay fans had a chance to cast their eyes over new signing, Ross Lafayette. Joining in mid-week from National league side, Sutton United, the 6ft 2ins striker was a muscular presence throughout, held the ball up very well, and contributed clever assists for both Blues goals. His first involvement of note was a 10th minute header placed narrowly wide after a cross on the run from Jake Howells.

Billericay took the lead through Emmanuel on 17 minutes. The move began with a deadly accurate long-range pass from Kizzi, which was taken down expertly on his chest by Lafayette. Spinning quickly, the tall striker threaded a pass through the Taunton back-line to the waiting Emmanuel. Pausing momentarily to gauge the linesman’s reaction, no offside infringement was adjudged. The Blues frontman finished calmly firing beyond the on rushing Lloyd Irish from six yards.

Having enjoyed considerable success in recent years, Taunton is a confident outfit and reacted calmly to going behind. A clever pass from White, who linked well with the strikers from his defensive position, found Neal at the edge of the Billericay penalty area. Twisting expertly to elude the attentions of the defensive cover, a right foot shot across the keeper, from a man more noted for his left side, nestled into the far corner of the net. Neal’s speed on the counter, ability to link well with Wright, and technical quality proved problematic all afternoon. Although he blotted his copybook with a 73rd minute dismissal for a lunge on Dean Inman, his importance was emphasized by the consequences of his departure, which considerably weakened Taunton.

Putting together some impressive passing combinations, Billericay were comfortable circulating the ball around the team and maintaining possession. With control of the game, the Blues started to create good opportunities to score. Another well directed cross from Joe Kizzi locked onto Emmanuel alone at the far post. His 28th minute header was firm but wayward. Sam Deering, a busy presence throughout the game, took matters into his own hands with a wickedly swerving shot on goal. Taunton goalkeeper, Irish, had to change direction late but had the necessary footwork in his locker and did well to push it away.

Despite home pressure, Taunton carved out a clear-cut chance in the 38th minute as Blues goalkeeper, Alan Julian, was forced to intervene. Neal and Wright combined well with a passing interchange that bisected the Billericay defence. Wright’s sight of goal, from wide on the right, was narrowed down expertly by Julian who pulled off a diving save with his legs to foil the Taunton striker.

Within sixty seconds, Billericay regained the lead with a superb example of “pass and move” football. From deep, Deering took possession and sent a through ball to Emmanuel. A one touch square pass to strike partner Lafayette followed as the nippy striker sped into the Taunton box for Lafayette’s return. In a race with Irish, the Billericay man reached the ball first and, knowing a collision would occur, bravely finished with a classy dink over the keeper.

With half-time fast approaching, a slender lead at the break would have been no more than Billericay deserved on superior possession and chance count. Taunton had other ideas and roared back to restore parity within 4 minutes. Central midfielder, Ben Adelsbury, was the architect, breaking quickly down the Blues’ left hand channel to reach the by-line. Once there, an expert flick of the ball over the head of the covering home defender, saw him move into space. With several Taunton players screaming for the pass in the centre, he picked out defensive midfielder Matt Buse who smashed home from close range.

Billericay started the second period strongly building pressure with an enterprising Howells run releasing Emmanuel for a drive that failed to find the target. Jamie O’Hara’s entry on 56 minutes in place of youngster, Coveney, also provided extra impetus in central midfield areas. Dray reacted by sending on striker Dan Sullivan in place of third central defender, Trowbridge, and Taunton showed tactical flexibility changing formation to a flat back four.

The switch bore fruit as the Peacocks worked themselves into the game and earned a 65th minute penalty as a shot in the box struck the hand of Lafayette.
With two penalty conversions in the League already this season, including an injury time leveller against Hendon, captain, Wright, took responsibility for the kick. With a preference for the right side or, if the keeper moves early, a blast down the centre, Wright took the second option. Although solidly struck, too much elevation on the kick saw the ball cannon off the cross bar and away.

An almighty let off for the Blues prompted a re-think on personnel with Brennan sending on fleet footed winger, Ricky Modeste, for Shokunbi and adding vital experience to a vulnerable back-line, switching in Inman for debutant, Stewart. On 71 minutes, O’Hara worked himself an opening and, with very little back-lift, let fly from 35 yards, sending a low shot narrowly wide of the left hand post.

With the match in the balance, the whole dynamic of the game changed with Neal’s red card. With the referee a little lax on earlier indiscretions from both sides, a series of non-malicious fouls from Neal should probably have drawn an earlier caution. Perhaps with a previous warning, the talented forward would not have launched into his challenge on Inman. At any rate, his dismissal sharply raised the odds in favour of the home side and put the Peacocks under pressure.

For the final 20 minutes of the match, the main chances fell to Billericay as Taunton’s Wright toiled manfully on his own whilst closely marked by Inman and Scott Doe. Kizzi set up Emmanuel with a well-placed header but, with his back to goal, Taunton snuffed out the danger. Alfie Potter, who alternated between the right side and central midfield, worked himself into space and unleashed a fierce shot narrowly over the cross bar.

As the clock ticked down, Billericay had one last chance to settle the tie on the day. The opportunity fell to Emmanuel who, located on the penalty spot, directed a volley over the bar. Falling backwards whilst striking the ball, the hat-trick eluded the striker who can console himself on reaching 11 goals for the season.

A difficult trip to the West Country awaits the Blues on Wednesday night to secure the prize of a potential plum first round tie. Noting the benefit of the Blues’ substitutions during the match, a couple of changes to the Blues starting X1 can be expected for the replay. Taunton will also have key players such as left sided creative midfielder, Ryan Brett, and regular right-back, Pierce Mitchell available for selection after suspension. Looking at shape, the Peacocks could also elect to play from the start with four at the back rather than 3-5-2.

Billericay will be under no illusions that failure to secure passage to the next round will be seen as an opportunity missed. Taunton look a side that can aspire to National South football next year and, whichever side comes out on top, will have more than earned their place in the first round of the 2018-19 FA Cup.

Leigh’s Man of the Match: Moses Emmanuel
“His two goal contribution had the greatest effect on the game. Not his finest overall performance but his bravery and clever finish for the 2nd goal was key.”

Top Man for Taunton Town: Shane White
“Switched to the right, he stuck to his defensive duties well and posed attacking threat. A couple of neat through balls contributed in the build-up to the goals. ”.
