Are you taking your daily dose of vitamin or mineral supplements? Millions of us take them every day, but did you know that the time of day you take them could be just as important as the tablets themselves.

In many cases the food and drink taken alongside them can dramatically affect the way the body absorbs them, and can render them effectively useless.

There are some ways to make the most out of your supplements.

Some nutrients such as B vitamins and Co Enzyme Q10 which are for energy are better taken in the morning, after breakfast. Multi-vitamins are best taken after the evening meal as your body’s repair system is coming into action during the evening and overnight. Your body can use the nutrients in the tablets much more efficiently. Calcium is more easily absorbed at night too so those supplements should be taken in the evening too.

Supplements such as fish oil are also best taken in the evening, as they are also for regeneration.

Taking supplements on an empty stomach can cause nausea and stop them from being used by the body, with the exception of iron which is best taken on an empty stomach and definitely not with dairy based products.

Fat soluble vitamins can only be absorbed with the presence of fat, so, for example,  you could drink some milk with vitamins a,d,e and k.

Always check the instructions on the pack, which should give you a clear indication. That way you will be getting the best value from your supplements for your body and your pocket.
