Friday Night Extra 24.8.18 Add some music to your day

Tonight we celebrated Eddie Willis, guitarist in The Funk Brothers, the Motown house band from 1959-1972. His playing on The Supremes You keep me hanging on is unlike anything else you will hear. We also remembered Ed King, guitarist in Lynyrd Skynyrd. We had two tracks from the best selling album in the UK for 1972, which just amazed listeners. Two tracks also from Joni Mitchel’s 1974 album Court & Spark, her best selling album and rated at 111 in the 500 Greatest albums of all time by Rolling Stone. We celebrated the birthday of Mark Bedford, bass guitarist in Madness.

Tonight’s playlist

Beach Boys – Add some music to your day

Aretha Franklin – Spirit in the dark

Lynyrd Skynyrd – Simple man – not the track you would have expected, but great guitar playing by Ed King.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Ed King of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Paul Bell – When you are gone

Cliff Richard – Summer holiday – an ironic choice by Phyl, with the rain beating on the roof of the studio and a dramatic drop in temperature.

Will Hoge – Even if it breaks your heart

Paul Young – Wherever I lay my hat, that’s my home – chosen by Patrick, on holiday in Jersey. He made the connection that producer Kevin Poree was born on the island. And what a production, the base is incredible.

Madness – One better day – co-written by Mark Bedford

Madness – Our house

Shires – Nashville grey skies

Lady Antebellum – Perfect day

Renaissance – Norther lights

Lisa Harman – Not while I’m around

The Goodbye Look – Eye to eye

Lindisfarne – Meet me on the corner – Their album Fog on the Tyne was the best selling album in the UK in 1972. It spent 5 weeks at number 1, with a total of 56 weeks in the chart.

Lindisfarne – Train in G Major – also from the album

Joni Mitchel – Just like this train, Free man in Paris – from Court & Spark
