Yawning Man | Mario Lalli Interview – Musical Meanderings 16th August 2018

You can listen to the conversation as part of the show here in the podcast:

I first heard of Yawning Man when Neil and Miles from Wychhound joined me on the show back in June. They cited them as an influence and where thrilled to learn that they were going to be supporting them during their tour at the Rebellion Club in Manchester. Since then I have been discovering their music and learning more about them, particularly how influential they’ve been. Particularly in the stoner and desert rock scene, but also beyond due to their experimental nature and how they dabble in so many different genres.

I had the pleasure of joining Wychhound at the gig in Manchester and was able to experience Yawning Man’s music live, but was also grateful to meet one of the founding members and bassist, Mario Lalli and grab a few moments afterwards to record a conversation with him. I was thinking to ask him about his musical journey going back to when they started, but the conversation actually focussed on more recent times, to how things are unfolding now and why now. We spoke about how important it is to be in the present, to be grateful and aware that is where the happiness is.

They’re busier now than they ever have been, during their biggest ever European tour and Mario said that it can only have happened now, how before it wouldn’t have worked and we spoke about how that could be.

Their style of music influenced some of my musical choices during the show, centering around some of the instrumental metal music I’ve been enjoying recently, but also some recent new music, such as by Windhand, Far Behind The Sun and The Sun Burns Bright.

Also today brought the tragic news that Aretha Franklin had passed away. One of the greatest and most popular singers of all time. I’ve never known someone to pass and have such an impact on the number of people that shared stories online about it. I opened the show her version of Change Gonna Come, which I hope it will for all of us.
