Orient Hour season kicks off

Paul Golder writes for the Brentwood Gazette

We’re already gearing up for another football season on Phoenix FM with the relaunch of The Orient Hour, the world’s only weekly radio show dedicated to Leyton Orient!

Our third season of shows kicked off with some great guests including Orient legend Terry Howard, Orient fan, former semi-pro keeper, and goalkeeper coach Barri Twinn, and Orient’s World War I historian Steve Jenkins and playwright Michael Head who both discussed the arrival of The Greater Game at The WaterlooEast Theatre.

Future shows will feature the club’s Chief Executive Danny Macklin and owners Nigel Travis and Kent Teague.

The show – which is strongly supported by the club itself – gets an amazing reaction locally; I had no idea there were so many Orient fans in Brentwood but we’ve managed to get them all out of the woodwork.

Our show host Chris Hood does a great job anchoring it all and Andy Gilson puts in a fantastic shift in getting so many different guests in, including ex-players and managers.

You can hear it at 6pm every Sunday and as well as catching up on phoenixfm.com you can also now subscribe to it on iTunes to receive automatic weekly downloads.

Football is such a big part of the community that it really allows community radio to do some of its best work. We’ve got more plans to expand our football coverage next season, with John Chubb, Scott Lanza and Leigh Beakster reporting from around the grounds, as well as our record-breaking West Ham show and a new Arsenal show in the pipeline.

* Guests coming up in the next week include Alan Mason talking about Saint Francis Hospice’s Classic Car and Bike Festival and Steve Shepherd who will be introducing Brentwood Horticultural Society to our listeners.

* There will also be live music in the studio from Dice Phoenix, Indigo Face and Leanne Louise.
