Friday Night Extra 13.7.18 Ingatestone Summer show & Summer of 1976

Sarah Duke-Wooley from the organising committee of the Ingatestone & Fryerning Horticultural Society joined me to talk about the annual Summer Show that is celebrating its 52nd year. The event is on 21st of July at Seymour Field, just to the north of the village centre on the road to Chelmsford. She told us about the wide range of event, including country dancing, a dog show , a gymnastics display and a marching pipe band. There will also be stalls, BBQ, bar and an exhibition marquee. Everything begins at 12.30 with the marquee opening at 2pm. There is also a scarecrow competition.  Clearly a fun afternoon not to be missed.

In the second hour we focused on music from 1976, a summer that was really long and hot. We also looked at how prices had dramatically increased in the forty two years. Listeners were encouraged to guess the cost of a new Ford Cortina Mark 4. The highest suggestion was £3000, the lowest £300. The correct answer was £!960. Everyone, including a number of teenagers listening, stated how they loved the music from that year. Some real classics.

About Patrick Sherring

As a child I listened to the pirate radio ships, particularly Radio London on 266. I loved the romance of the DJs playing the latest music for the listeners to hear. After most of the pirate stations closed in August 1967 I used to listen to Fabulous 208 Radio Luxembourg, the continuing Radio Caroline, Radio North Sea International and Radio 1. I particularly enjoyed listening to radio in the evening and at night. One of my favourite shows was Late Night Extra in the early days of Radio 1. All kinds of guests would just turn up and be part of the show. As a listener radio should feel like a friend is talking directly to you. I dreamed of being on the radio for many years. In 1988 I began on Hospital Radio with Radio Enfield in north London. I had my own request show and used to commentate from Spurs and Enfield F.C. home games. I was also part of the Radio Enfield Roadshow team, taking part in many outside broadcasts. Now I am delighted to be on Phoenix FM, where I have had a Friday show since May 2011. On the show there are a mixture of musical genres. Often there are guests giving lengthy interviews on a wide range of topics including faith and social action. There are also some live music performances. This little boy's dream has come true!
