Billericay Blog: Still Top, 5 Games To Go

🔵⚪️🔵 Billericay Town FC 🔵⚪️ Still Top 5 Games To Go

On Monday we played at home on our own ground for the first time in a few weeks because the pitch had been waterlogged. It was another wet evening and the playing surface was difficult, but despite that we beat Staines 5-3. It was an entertaining game to watch, Ricky Modeste scored a brilliant goal, but had to go off injured in the second half. Ricky was replaced by Jake Robinson, Jake then scored 2 fantastic goals taking his seasons total to 52. By taking his total to 52 he has beaten the previous record for goals in a season 1997/98 of 51 by Leon Gutzmore

The game against Staines was the team’s 7th match in 14 days, despite the possibility of tiredness setting in they showed great character and fighting spirit. Total goals scored this season increased to 178

On Wednesday 11th April we played Metropolitan Police in the League Cup Final at Aveley. Although we took an early lead in the match the opposition came back strongly leading 3-1 in the second half. With 5 minutes left of the game Billy Bricknell scored 2 brilliant goals taking the game into extra time. Although Met Police had played really well for 80 minutes of the game we totally dominated extra time and Billy scored his third completing a great hat trick. This was the second cup won this season, the last time we won 2 competitions was in 1978 when the club won the Athenian League and FA Vase in 1979. We also retained the League Cup which we won last season beating Tonbridge 8-3

Home league attendances are averaging approximately 983 which is lower than what the club were requiring at the start of the season but it’s not surprising taking into account the number of games played, the weather and playing some home fixtures at Aveley. The club still have one of the best averages in the Bostik Leagues/Evostik Leagues apart from Dulwich and Hereford. There is only one club (Dartford) in the National League South that has better averages than ours. We are also the 2nd best supported away team taking into account averages for the Bostik League/Evostik Leagues

On Saturday 14th April we drew at home with Wingate & Finchley 2-2 in front of an excellent crowd of 1048. The pitch wasn’t good and made passing football very difficult to play. We wasted several chances in the first half and the score at HT 0-0. The second half didn’t start well and we were soon down 2-0, but a spirited fight back levelled the score 2-2. (Total goals scored 180)

Games coming up :
Tuesday 17th April (away) v Dorking
Thursday 19th April (home) v Needham
Saturday 21st April (away) v Margate
(Also playing on the 21/04 are Folkestone v Dulwich and on the 28/04 we play at home to Folkestone )
