Essex Senior League – Saturday 14th April Preview

ESL

Essex Senior League

The game of the day has to be at Burroughs Park, where leaders Great Wakering Rovers entertain a Wadham Lodge side currently sitting deep in the relegation mire. Rovers had a three point lead over Redbridge and therefore cannot afford to slip up. Lodge go into this game winless in six and need all the three points on offer to keep them in touch with the teams above them. However Rovers rammed four without reply at relegation battlers Burnham Ramblers last weekend and it is hard to see them slipping up against another team involved in the business at the other end of the table.

Redbridge have a slightly tougher test as they take on an Enfield 1893 side that have won their last eight games, which has seen them climb up to 9th in the table. The Motormen have had a slight wobble recently, losing 3-2 at Clapton and then last weekend throwing a 3-0 half-time lead away as Waltham Forest scored two late goals to leave Oakside with a point from a 4-4 draw. Redbridge need to pick themselves up, and have the firepower to do it. But Enfield 1893 will fancy their chances and are more than capable of getting something from this game.

FC Romania sit 3rd and will be keeping a keen eye on event at Oakside because anymore Redbridge slip-ups could allow them to sneak into the other promotion spot. The Wolves have to keep winning their own games of course and have a difficult trip to a resurgent Sawbridgeworth Town who have won their last five league games as well as booking their place in this season’s Errington Challenge Cup Final. FC Romania lifted the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy, but they have dreams of one day playing in the Bostik League, so need to make sure that Florin Pop and his various accomplices have a good day in front of goal as the Robins haven’t been to gun-shy themselves recently.

Stansted occupy a relegation spot and therefore need to make home advantage count against West Essex. Waltham Forest also have home advantage, having picked up two amazing results last week; starting with a 3-0 win at promotion chasing Basildon United and then coming back from behind to snatch a point at Redbridge in a 4-4 draw. Such resolve means that Waltham Forest, having secured their future off the pitch, are not fighting to maintain their Essex Senior League status. They take on a Southend Manor side who sit in a slightly more comfortable mid-table position.
