Senior League Cup

Frenford entertain Newham United in the Semi Final of the Senior League Cup with the Premier Division leaders looking to reach their first Final in this competition since . Standing in their way is a Newham United side who sit in the lower reaches of Division Two, but who have caused a stir in this season’s competition, knocking out the holders Basildon Town in the 2nd Round and then in the last round doing the same to last season Premier Division winners Springfield. It’s a tough game for Frenford as they have home advantage, lead the Premier Division table and are in good form. But Newham United didn’t read the script when they have faced previous Premier Division foes and whilst they will be the underdogs they are capable of springing a surprise. Kelvedon Hatch entertain Great Baddow in a Quarter Final tie; while the all-Premier affair between Leigh Ramblers and Bishop’s Stortford Swifts is the other Quarter Final tie being played on Saturday; the winners play each other in the one remaining Semi Final.

Premier Division

May & Baker E.C. can cut into Frenford’s lead if they can pick up points at Harold Wood Athletic. The Barking-based club have games in hand but need points on the board, and having lost two out of their last three means that they have had a slight wobble at the wrong time of the season. They did win the corresponding fixture in January 4-3, so another close game is likely with the hosts mathematically also still involved in the title hunt due to having five games in hand. If either side want to make a realistic claim for the title then they need to win games such as this one.

Rayleigh Town meanwhile can take a step closer to safety if they can pick up a win over Springfield. Last season’s Premier Division champions currently sit 3rd but lost the corresponding fixture 1-0 and the hosts have a lot more riding on this game and will battle hard for the points. One team hoping for a Springfield win will be Basildon Town who need Rayleigh to lose whilst they take care of their own business, a tough away assignment with Essex Premier Cup and Anagram Records Trophy Finalists Catholic United. Will their eye be off the ball due to these Cup Final appearances? One thing is certain and that is that Basildon Town have four games left in which to save themselves and this in many ways is their own Cup Final. A Basildon defeat almost consigns them to relegation; so they too have a lot more riding on this game than 6th-placed Catholic United,
