Prokit UK Essex Olympian League – Saturday 17th March Preview

BBC Essex Premier Cup

Last weekend saw Buckhurst Hill book their Final place after upsetting the odds to beat Waltham Abbey Res. The other two teams, Old Southendian and Catholic United saw their tie washed out; but they hopefully go again this weekend with Catholic United now hosting the match-up. The hosts play in the Olympian Premier Division and are on a redemption trail to make up for last season’s bittersweet success. They have to be cast as the favourites as Old Southendian play one Olympian tier below their opponents. However the Essex Premier Cup is never short of shock results; Old Southendian have provided a few of them this season, having accounted for Manford Way and Frenford on route to reaching the Semi Final. They are up for this game and a third Olympian Premier scalp places them into the Final. But having won and then lost the trophy last season due to a technicality, has put fire in Catholic United’s belly and they have ruthlessly brushed aside four teams, scoring twenty two goals and conceding only thrice to reach this far, it is hard to see them faltering at this last hurdle. Either way a Southend-based club will be contesting the Final at Thurrock FC’s Ship Lane Stadium in April.

Premier Division

Basildon Town finally posted a much needed win last weekend – it means they have now posted two wins and they now need to win the remaining four games if they have any chance of avoiding the drop. They still need the teams above to go on a losing streak, but they need to attend to their own affairs and White Ensign, currently sitting 3rd, provide the opposition. A win for the visitors helps them cut a bit into Frenford’s lead.

Are Kelvedon Hatch about to launch a late season charge to the title? Currently sitting in 4th place with three games in hand theoretically places them closer to Frenford then the title currently suggests. The visit to Manford Way has to yield the full quota of points if they wish to put the pressure on Frenford, who themselves stumbled at this same venue in January.

Senior League Cup

Leigh Ramblers put aside their inconsistent league campaign as they look to book a Semi Final appearance in the Senior League Cup. Having put aside lower Division sides in previous rounds they now have to step up to the plate and face fellow Premier Division rivals Bishop’s Stortford Swifts. The visitors have knocked out two Premier Division outfits in previous rounds and have the capabilities to end another Premier Division side’s Cup quest.
