Essex Senior League – Saturday 17th March Preview

ESL

Essex Senior League

Great Wakering Rovers lead the table going into Saturday’s games by a mere two points. It means they need to make it a happy outing to East London, with a potential double in the offing as the corresponding fixture ended in a 6-1 Rovers victory. Since then Tower Hamlets have won twice from their following six games. Rovers meanwhile have won seven against one draw which has seen them climb to the summit. They go into this one on the back of a 4-0 win at Sawbridgeworth Town in midweek and it’s hard to see them slipping up here. However if a fired-up Hamlets take to the field then an upset is possible; Rovers are definitely the form side going into to this one though.

Two teams that will be keeping an eye on Great Wakering’s results are FC Romania and Redbridge; however they need to attend to their own business against each other first before turning their attention to event over in Mile End. This game is compelling in so many ways as a win for FC Romania at minimum keeps the pressure on Wakering – they could even return to the top of the table if they get a win and Wakering taste defeat. The Motormen were sailing at one point but have lost twice in recent weeks to promotion and title candidates. Those setbacks aside the Motormen are still 3rd and very close to the title action. Could their midweek 4-2 win at West Essex kick-start their engine? FC Romania registered a 5-0 win last weekend and they are up against a Redbridge side that don’t keep many clean sheets. But the Motormen do have fire power, as do the hosts, meaning that this encounter does throw-up the possibility of goals. More importantly the result of this game could have some bearing on the title and promotion issue come April.

Basildon United need to pick up all the points on offer at Burnham Ramblers if they want to keep their hand in on the promotion issue. The Bees sit 4th with games in hand on the top three. However would no doubt prefer points, therefore they need to win to keep within touching distance of the promotion places. Burnham Ramblers need points for the opposite reasons – since the turn of the year they haven’t won a single game and those seven defeats have seen them drop into the relegation zone. Burnham can’t buy a win at the moment and now take on a side that have been floating around the top all season.

Hullbridge Sports are still in the drop zone but the teams above them are within touching distance, plus they have games in hand. Their opponents, Takeley, sit 5th but with games in hand could also have a say in the promotion issue. However they have to make sure they pick up all the points at Hullbridge had an incredible FA Vase run this season, and on their day have enough quality to suggest they are in a false position. However platitudes aside, they now have to start going on a decent run of form to finally get themselves out of the relegation mire. A win here sees Hullbridge move out of it; but Takeley won the corresponding fixture 2-0, have also beaten Hullbridge in both ESL cup competitions and go into the game as eager for points if they want to launch a promotion push as the season comes to its climax.

Hackney Wick posted a 2-0 win over landlords Clapton in midweek. If the great escape is to be achieved they have to back that up with another win at the Old Spotted Dog on Saturday when they play hosts to West Essex. The visitors lost an entertaining game to Redbridge in midweek and do tend to win one then lose one. The Wickers will be hoping that proves not to be the case; they need to make it back-to-back wins if they want to give themselves a fighting chance of avoiding the drop.

There’s an interesting pairing on Saturday as Wadham Lodge entertain Barkingside, with Barkingside then playing hosts on Monday Evening. Should Wadham Lodge win both of those then they would pull themselves out in spectacular style, while Barkingside would find themselves dragged back in it. The other possibility is that Barkingside win both, which would move them further away from the danger zone, leaving Wadham Lodge firmly entranced in it. Wadham Lodge need to win and draw both these upcoming engagements as they currently sit second from bottom. Barkingside do have a habit of losing games late, are now winless in two, so go into these two also needing points to ensure they don’t go into the business end of the season with a relegation fight on their hands.
