Essex Senior League – Saturday 20th January Preview

ESL

Essex Senior League

Two late goals from Calvin Poku saw Redbridge beat Barkingside 2-1 on Friday evening placing Redbridge back to the top of the table after FC Romania briefly held top spot in midweek. FC Romania have the chance to return to the top of the table if they secure all three points at Sawbridgeworth Town. The Robins rifled five past Hullbridge Sports on Tuesday and have been making a steady climb up the table having been in the relegation zone for parts of the season. On their day they can give anyone a tough game, but FC Romania have been consistent this season, have several players that they can call upon to find the back of the net and are in a good spell of form.

Basildon United hammered Hackney Wick 7-0 last weekend and now visit an Enfield 1893 side that sit second from bottom in the table. The Bees may have lost to Clapton in a cup game in midweek but their league form has seen them win five and draw once in their last six games. Enfield have secured only a solitary point from their last five games and need to start putting points on the board to get themselves out of the relegation mire. Basildon are scoring goals all over the pitch at the moment, so even if Enfield keep Marcus Bowers quiet means they still have a tough assignment this afternoon.

Hackney Wick have to pick themselves up from last week’s drubbing at Basildon United but will find Takeley tough opposition. The Wickers replaced yet another manager in midweek, they have had four so far this term, and currently sit at the foot of the table. They desperately need points or run the risk of getting cut adrift;  with only one point from their last five means that the Wickers need to find a way to win games and quickly. Scoring goals has been a problem all term and they have shipped 19 goals in their last five league games. Takeley smashed 9 past Burnham Ramblers last weekend and recently beat Hackney Wick 4-0 in the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy. It’s hard to see Hackney Wick getting anything from this game as Takeley do have fire-power to unleash.
