Friday Night Extra 19.1.18 with Sophie Grffiths singing live.

Sophie Griffiths joined us in the studio tonight and sang three numbers live. She talked about how she first sung live at Ingatestone C of E Junior school and loved the experience. Encouragement at Secondary school has led her to develop her love of singing. She told us how her father’s love of MOTOWN and soul music had influenced her love of that style of music and she loves singing songs from that genre. Sophie entered the Open Mic UK competition as a duo with a friend and reached the regional final This led to her being approached by ChartHouse studio to join their Artists Development programme She came third in the Quay Junior Talent competition and this led to a decision to enter Essex Factor, where she reached the grand final. She clearly has a bright future. Up-coming gigs are 22nd Jan supporting D’LuXE at Premier Cinemas Romford and performing at SEEA Awards on Sunday 28th at 4pm. Sophie is delighted to be supporting Kids Inspire, singing at a charity curry night on 31st of Jan at India Night in Chelmsford. She is also singing at St. Peter’s church, Hutton at a quiz night on 24th of Feb supporting 7 year old Shiloh, who suffers from Cystic Fibrosis. Other dates to be confirmed. You can find more info on Facebook @SophieGriffithsSinger Instagram @sophiegriffithssinger Twitter @sophiesinger

In the second hour we celebrated the career of the Cranburys, remembering the great voice of Dolores O’Riordon. We also remembered singer Peter Sarstedt and actor, Peter Wyngarde, best remembered as Jason King in the TV detective shows. He was said to be the inspiration for Austin Powers.

Tonight’s playlist

The Eagles – Take it easy

Sophie Griffiths singing live I heard it through the grapevine, I’d rather go blind & Runnin.

Adele – Chasing pavements

Derek & The Dominoes – Layla -full version

Bastille – Good grief -for Adrian

Ralph McTell – Streets of London – for Phyl

Hollies – Just one look – for Patrick

Verve – Bitter sweat symphony

David Bowie – Lets dance – for Sian

Marvin Gaye – Abraham, Martin and John

ELO – The dairy of Horace Wimp – an amazing track if listened to through headphones

Cranberries – Dreams, You and me

Peter Sarstedt – Where do you go to my lovely? – for Margaret who commented on the Facebook post

Lisa Harman – What the world needs now – Patrick e-mailed in to say that Lisa was now his favourite singer

Quincy Jones – Soul Bossanova – theme fro Austin powers

Jason KIng theme – Mike Townsend Orchestra. Chris had never heard of him, but was fascinated to know about the Austin Powers link.

R. Dean Taylor – There is a ghost in my house – in appreciation of Keith Rogers, who retired from PhoenixFm today. Keith has a radio career dating back to 1970 on Radio North Sea International, where he was Dave Rogers. I remember listening to him and he was one of the people who inspired me to dream of being on the radio. Who would have thought I would ever work for the same station as a legend such as Keith.

Justin Hayward – Forever Autumn – the track was adored by Rene.

Shakatak – Brazilian dawn.
