Billericay Town were clearly unfazed by the task of facing a Football League club in the Essex Senior Cup, as they fired 7 goals past an experimental Southend United team.

Town assistant managers Harry Wheeler and Danny Hazel, looking after the side in Glenn Tamplin’s absence rested several players who have been first team regulars in recent times. Among those coming into the side were goalkeeper Jack Giddens, who recently returned from a loan spell at Heybridge Swifts and the latest Ricay recruit, former Leicester City youngster Andre Olukanmi who was included in the home side’s midfield.

Shrimpers manager Phil Brown took the opportunity to give some of his under-23 players some experience, but also involved several of his first team squad. The most experienced professionals in the line up were midfield man Jermaine McGlashan, and strikers Nile Ranger and Theo Robinson but Dru Yearwood and Elvis Bwomono, both of whom have been involved in recent EFL League One fixtures for the Roots Hall club were also included.

The home side hit the ground running as early as the 4th minute, Jake Robinson firing the ball home at the back post following a Joe Ellul flick on, to make it 1-0. A couple of minutes later Theo Robinson went close for the Shrimpers but in the 9th minute Billy Bricknell met a corner at the other end, and capitalised on an error by the young visiting goalkeeper Nathan Bishop to make it 2-0 to Billericay.

Southend were back in it after a quarter of an hour thanks to Ranger firing the ball past Giddens and into the net, but on 23 minutes the home side were awarded a penalty after Bwomono was adjudged to have fouled Olukanmi. Bricknell made no mistake from the spot to make it 3-1 to Ricay.

Five minutes into the second half and it was Southend who got back into the tie when they were awarded a penalty. Amadou Ba, who had replaced the injured Ranger just over halfway through the first 45 minutes slotted the ball home. But it only took Billericay 3 minutes to reply, as Bricknell controlled a cross and fired a great effort past Bishop to seal his hat trick and make it 4-2 to the home side.

On 65 minutes Southend boss Brown made another change, sending on youngster Norman Wabo in place of Theo Robinson and he made almost an immediate impact, scoring to bring the scoreline back to 4-3 but 5 minutes later Jake Robinson had added another to make it 5 goals for the home side. A couple of minutes later it was 6 as Dan Walker rifled the ball past Bishop from 10 yards out, then Robinson completed the rout 10 minutes from time when he found the net from a Jermaine Pennant corner to make it 7-3, and in doing so became the Billericay supporters’ second 3-goal hero of an extraordinary evening.

So Billericay now go through to the next stage of the Essex Senior Cup, and certainly left their professional visitors with something to think about.

Billericay Town: Jack Giddens, Joshua Urquhart, Paul Konchesky, Joe Ellul, Matt Paine, Sam Deering (Louie Theophanous 56), Dan Walker, Jermaine Pennant, Andre Olukanmi, Jake Robinson, Billy Bricknell (Leo Chambers 65).

Southend United : Nathan Bishop, Elvis Bwomono, Dan Matsuzaka, Zak Pianim, Nico Cotton, Jermaine McGlashan (Harry Phillips 75), Dru Yearwood, Michael Klass, Jack Bridge, Theo Robinson (Norman Wabo 65), Nile Ranger (Amadou Ba 25).
