Friday Night Extra 10.2.17 Thanks Aretha

Tonight we appreciated the musical legacy of Aretha Franklin. She has announced that she will retire this year and no longer perform live. Aretha has a career spanning sixty years and has resulted in 112 chart hit singles in the USA and worldwide has sold over 75 million albums. Rolling Stone Magazine in its list of 100 greatest singers of all time placed Aretha at No 1. We featured 2 tracks from the Beach Boys 1979 L.A. (Light Album) seen by many people as their worst. Interesting how even their worst is better than many artists tracks. In the news researchers at Glasgow University had found that dogs prefer reggae and soft rock over other genre’s of music. So there were plenty of tracks for the dogs to enjoy tonight!
Tonight’s playlist
Booker T & MGs – Crazy
Gregory Porter – Holding on
Alison Krauss – Losing you – from the new album out in March.
Jimmy Cliff – Wonderful world, beautiful people
Stevie Wonder & Anicia Grace – Faith
Acker Bilk – Stranger on the shore – requested by Phyl
Lisa Harman – There must be an angel/Sweet dreams are made of this – we loved the way Lisa mixed these two songs together.
Fleetwood Mac – Dreams
George Michael – Praying for time – from Symphonica
Post Modern Juke Box – Careless Whispers – live date soon in Cambridge. Track liked by some listeners, but not by others! We were dancing in the studio.
La La Land soundtrack – A lonely night
Ice House – Hey little girl
Rick Wakeman – Life on Mars – from Piano Portraits – his 100th solo album
Rick Astley – Wish away
Sony & Cher – Little man – requested by Patrick
Japan – I second that emotion – requested by Chris, working on marking books…on a Friday evening
Lou Rawls – You made me so very happy – remembering David Axelrod, who produced this track.
Battleship Galactica theme – remembering actor Richard Hatch
Steptoe & Son theme – remembering writer Alan Simpson and bringing back lots of memories for Adrian. A young listener did not know what a rag and bone man was!
Beach Boys – Full sail and Going south form the L.A. (Light Album)
Ward Thomas – Carry me home
Aretha Franklin – I say a little prayer
Aretha Franklin – Respect
Sly & the Family Stone – Everyday People – USA no 1 this week in 1979.
George Martin – Theme 1.
