Match Report: Chelmsford City 2 Braintree Town 0

Phoenix FM’s JOHN CHUBB reporting from Melbourne Park

Chelmsford City progressed to the semi-finals of the Essex Senior Cup on Monday night with a victory over Vanarama National League neighbours Braintree Town, thanks to two second half goals.

chelmsfordcity

Both sides entered this tie on the back of weekend cup success, having both been involved in Saturday’s FA Trophy 2nd round ties. The Clarets returned from Kent with a tremendous 1-0 victory over their high-flying National League South rivals Dartford to earn a 3rd round trip to Tranmere Rovers, whilst just across the Thames Estuary the Iron visited East Thurrock United and secured a 5-2 win.

Braintree fielded a second string line up for this contest, with none of the players involved in their weekend victory making an appearance. It seems Chelmsford manager Rod Stringer was keener to progress in this competition, with all but two of the players in the 16-man squad having been involved in Saturday’s victory although five of the players who started at Dartford – including matchwinning debutant Chris Dickson – were on the bench for this encounter. Michael Spillane and Kane Haysman were the two players drafted into the side.

A predominantly uneventful first half saw both sides largely cancel each other out. Both defences were on top, with some good challenges being made and little in the way of clear cut opportunities. The Iron had an early chance from a 4th minute corner, which was headed wide by Danny Rumens.

The home side had their first real chance in the 19th minute, when Spillane’s long range but powerful free kick was turned over by Braintree keeper Ben McNamara. Six minutes later Daniel Blanchett picked out Clarets centre forward Shaun Jeffers with a long through ball, but once again McNamara was wise to the danger and Jeffers’ effort was saved.

Braintree midfield man Jake Thompson tested City keeper Ross Fitzsimons from outside the area, Clarets skipper Christopher Bush – who put in an impressive display at the back – had a free kick saved on the half hour and Kane Haysman had a right footed shot stopped by McNamara, but neither team was able to the break the deadlock by half time so the scoreline remained 0-0 at the interval.

The Iron had the first couple of goalscoring chances after the restart, with a dangerous looking cross headed behind the goal to safety by Blanchett in the 56th minute. This was followed soon after by a Thompson header for Braintree sailing just over the bar. Come the hour mark Bush’s long throw resulted in a bout of head tennis in the Braintree penalty area. Spillane was the City player to head on target, but McNamara pulled off another fine save.

Chelmsford took the lead in the 66th minute. The Clarets won a corner which was met in the box by Max Porter. His powerful header was too much for Iron keeper McNamara, who was finally beaten after making some fine saves.

City’s goal seemed to spark the game into life, with Braintree coming close to an equaliser just 2 minutes later. Matt Baxter laid the ball on for Rumens, who found himself one on one with Fitzsimons but his shot was stopped by the Clarets’ custodian.

There then followed a spell of sustained pressure from Chelmsford. Bush twice went close with free kicks, Haysman had a shot turned over by McNamara and Blanchett fired wide in the 81st minute. Then with 6 minutes from the end, Jeffers was clearly fouled inside the box and referee Rob Whitton had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.

Jeffers rose to his feet to take the penalty and made no mistake, his well struck spot kick thundering past McNamara and into the net, much to the delight of the home fans. Braintree nearly pulled one back a minute later, when Craig Barrett’s shot was cleared off the line by Bush. Chelmsford held on though, and go into the hat for Wednesday’s semi-final draw along with East Thurrock, Tilbury and Heybridge Swifts.

Chelmsford: Fitzsimons, Young, Blanchett, Porter, Bush, Spillane, Daley, Rees, Jeffers, Roberts, Haysman.
Braintree: McNamara, Houtfouakin, Williams, Rumens, Ashton, Baxter, Mallet, Thompson (Hayls 70), Kabeye (Manley 83), Dias, Barrett.
Attendance: 558
