Exercising self control is very difficult at this time of year. The food and drink abounds and it’s so easy to get carried away. The next best thing when it comes to alcohol consumption is to choose drinks that will be slightly easier on the hangover feeling.
Vodka is a drink that will be a little easier on your liver.Any of the clear liquors like gin, saki, etc are less likely to cause a hangover. It’s best not to mix them with a soft drink as sugar can add to the hangover. Go for soda or fruit juice if you must.
Worst of all is beer. Dark drinks tend to be worse. Red wine can be worse than white and cheap wines can be worse still, containing many additives that the more expensive wines leave out. Champagne is absorbed into the bloodstream faster than other drinks because of the carbon dioxide making the bubbles. And try to avoid too much of the darker liquors like whisky, brandy or port.
To avoid a hangover altogether try a glass of water. Not quite the same though is it! Certainly the best option if you’re the designated driver though.
Coconut water is good before and after a night out as it helps to cleanse the liver, and it’s hydrating.
Try not to drink on an empty stomach, and have something afterwards too. It will help to soak up the alcohol. Nothing too greasy, or high in sugar. Favoured herbal supplements are milk thistle.
It’s never good to over indulge and to lose the whole of the next day is such a waste. Drink sensibly and enjoy your christmas to the full.
