How do you eat you food?
Apparently if you eat in front of the tv it isn’t good for you! According to research by eating in this way you are more likely to eat fast food and are more likely to mindlessly overeat. Even if you have it on in the background and not actually watching it. Chances are you’ll be more unsatisfied by the meal than if you sit with family around the dinner table. Sitting around the table is also a social occasion and gives everyone the chance to catch up on what’s happening in each others lives.
Do you pay attention to sell by dates on food? About a third of the food in the world is thrown away needlessly . We are often so scared of getting food poisoning that we will throw away perfectly good food, just because of the date stamp on it. Alcohol for example takes years to go off, indeed sometimes the older it is the better it is! Chocolate is also safe to eat even when it has those white spots on it which are called bloom. It might not taste as good as the day you bought it but it shouldn’t make you ill. The same goes for old crisps, the salt on them acts as a preservative. Eggs can last for 3 to 5 weeks, but they have to be kept below 5 degrees centigrade. A simple way to check is put them in cold water and if they sink they’re fresh and if they float they’ve gone off. The hard cheeses like cheddar are ok to eat after their best before date too.
The answer is to use your common sense. If something looks and smells off, then it isn’t safe to eat. Otherwise it probably won’t do you any harm. Years ago there were no sell by or best before dates. Let’s go back to doing what our grandparents did, and cut out the waste!
