Phoenix FM Film Review 16.7.2016

This week in film; Ice Age: Collision Course and Ghostbusters: Answer The Call.

Ice Age Collision Course

The 5th film in the Ice Age Franchise, Collision Course sees Manny, Sid, Diego and the rest attempt to stop a meteorite hitting earth after Scrat accidentally pilots a space ship.

Completely ludicrous and desperate to keep flogging this mammoth, the plot of IACC is only fun in how truly dumb it is. The family squabbling is overdone and unoriginal, and more poignant in IA films gone by. Not particularly funny, but not unfunny either, the well implemented trio of the original is now joined by a whole host of stupid zany characters and saturate the appeal of Scrat.

I wouldn’t recommend unless you have kids, but based on the 5th film (discounting TV shows and specials) of a franchise attempting to copy Shrek and Pixar, it’s not completely without enjoyment.

Ghostbusters: Answer The Call

A reboot of the classic zeitgeist hit, this heavily dreaded female re-imagining sees 3 scientists, fired from their respective institutions, team up, joined by a streetwise woman, in order to defeat an earth shattering paranormal plight.

I’ve been one flying the flag for Ghostbusters against the huge wave of internet hate that has been pummeling and even I went in worried as a colossal Ghostbusters fan. It surprised me at how much I enjoyed it. Perfectly happy being its own thing, unafraid to be silly, Ghostbusters is a lot of fun, partly down to some of the cast who completely rock their roles.

Not without flaws, occasionally Ghostbusters holds on to the original too much, and is occasionally infantile in its delivery. There’s a lot of references and cameos for Ghostbusters fans to enjoy, but Answer The Call really shines when it strives to be different, and has fun doing so.

Just a quick mention that Star Wars Celebration was this weekend, and already we’ve had a first look at Rogue One (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUb_zpdyDpU) and Rebels Season 3 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmXp802sFgQ), a new Rogue One trailer is being released this evening as well. Sorry for being a nerd.
