NEWS THIS WEEK

1980 – Alexandra Palace in London was gutted by fire during a Jazz Festival. The fire started under the organ and quickly spread destroying half the building. The outer walls survived and the eastern parts, including the theatre and the BBC television studios and aerial mast, were saved. Some of the damage to the palace was repaired immediately but Haringey council overspent on the restoration, creating a £30 million deficit. It was then reopened to the public in 1988 under a new management team.

1985 – Live Aid pop concerts in London and Philadelphia raise over £50 million for famine relief in Ethiopia. The original event was organised by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure. Billed as the “global jukebox”, the event was held simultaneously in London’s Wembley Stadium and John F. Kennedy Stadium in Pennsylvania.
On the same day, concerts inspired by the initiative happened in other countries, such as the Soviet Union, Japan, Austria, Australia and West Germany. It was one of the largest-scale satellite link-ups and television broadcasts of all time: an estimated global audience of 1.9 billion, across 150 nations, watched the live broadcast
