NEWS THIS WEEK
1980: The former Hollywood actor and Republican governor of California Ronald Reagan became the next president of the United States. He defeated Democrat Jimmy Carter in the US presidential elections by a huge majority. At the age of 69, Mr Reagan was America’s oldest president. His running mate, former head of the CIA George Bush, became his vice-president.
1985 – Garry Kasparov, 22, of the Soviet Union became the youngest World Chess Champion by beating Anatoly Karpov, also of the Soviet Union. Kasparov holds the record for the longest time as the No. 1 rated player in the world — from 1986 to 2005. In 2007 he wrote How Life Imitates Chess, an examination of the parallels between decision-making in chess and in the business world.
