Billericay Town 4
Leiston 0
On Monday night Billericay Town hosted Leiston in a match they had to win to keep alive their chances of promotion.
A depleted team lined up, with only 13 available. Ross Kitteridge came in for the injured Joe Wright in goal, with Richard Halle serving a suspension, Ricky Sappleton taking his place in the defence.
Just before the half hour mark, Glenn Poole was fouled, and as he and Danny Cunningham squared up, the Leiston player appeared to push his head into Poole’s. The referee was in agreement as Cunningham saw red.
On 40 minutes, the breakthrough, as Rowan Liburd met a cross, glancing his header beyond the reach of Gay in the Leiston goal.
Town only had to wait five minutes after the break for the second, Affy Obafemi finding himself in space on the edge of the box, placing the ball into the corner of the net.
As Leiston legs tired, Billericay piled on the misery. Stevie Sheehan, on great form all game, headed home a Poole corner before, in the 88th minute, Leiston defender Tom Bullard steered the ball beyond his keeper as he attempted to clear a Ryan Melaugh cross.
Billericay moved into 11th, four points off the playoffs and next face Canvey Island away on Saturday.
