Continuing our reflections on the First World War and how it impacted on life locally, I was joined today by local writer, Andrew Summers who’s book on the subject – THEY DID THEIR DUTY – ESSEX FARM NEVER FORGOTTEN – is scheduled for publication later this month.
The book is divided into three parts. The first part deals with Essex Farm, a WWI cemetery close to Ypres in Belgium and scene of some of the worst carnage during the war. Essex Farm was named after the Essex Regiment who fought in that location. The second part provides details of the Essex Regiment and their part in the war whilst the final section, deals with life on the home front and how the war was reported in the press. On a lighter note, in the second hour of today’s programme we heard how a Welsh pub came to be the focus of a police raid in search of the Holy Grail. Unfortunately the closest they came to finding it was a wooden bowl used to serve salad to customers!
See you again tomorrow,
Scott
