Today’s show was a Eurovision Special and our guest was legendary Eurovision songwriter Bill Martin.
He wrote the first song to win Eurovision for the UK – Puppet On A String by Sandie Shaw in 1967 and also wrote Cliff Richard’s Eurovision entry “Congratulations”, both of which reached no 1 in the UK singles charts. Bill wrote two more chart-toppers – Slik’s Forever and Ever (featuring a very young Midge Ure) and Back Home, a 1970 No 1 for the England World Cup Squad even though Bill is a Scot!
Bill has also worked with Van Morrison, Serge Gainsbourg, George Harrison and the king himself, Elvis Presley.
