Body Talk 26/3/14

My guest this evening was Mr Dip Mukherjee, Consultant General Surgeon at Spire Hartswood Hospital. Mr Mukherjee was discussing a new weight loss solution, the Obalon Balloon, available exclusively through Spire Healthcare. also joining us was Pamela, who is using the Obalon Balloon.

The balloon is is swallowed in the form of a capsule , and is inflated by catheter. It takes up space in your stomach, so you feel full even though you’ve eaten less. It stays in the stomach for three months, when an endoscopy is performed to remove the balloon. The average weight loss expected is 1 stone 3 pounds. Therefore it isn’t suitable for people with huge amounts of weight to lose, but those who need encouragement to shift those hard to lose few pounds.

The only side effects seem to be nausea for the first couple of days, and maybe a little discomfort.

We were also joined by Pamela who has been using the balloon for one month. So far she has lost 1 stone 6 pounds, and is very happy with her progress. After years of yoyo dieting, she feels now that she has found a way to control her weight. She is learning to choose the more healthy eating options, and also exercising more. All part of not just dieting but changing her lifestyle to suit her new diet plan. When the balloon is removed she is confident that she will continue to keep up her healthy regime.
