Today is Thursday which should mean that Bob Simpson would be in charge – but he did Monday when I should have been there, and yesterday when Mike Jones should have been the man.
Well my wife’s birthday was on Monday so Bob sat in for me and then I learnt today that Bob and Mike swopped places as well.
No matter – we like confusing people. Anyway I was delighted to be in with today’s show as apart from all that music we got to check out another couple of oddball news stories from Phoenix FM’s department of weird and whacky news.
First off was the story of the judge in Michigan who fined himself for being in contempt of court. You’ve got to feel a bit sorry for him as he had just bought a new smart phone that he hadn’t yet found how to operate – and in the middle of a case he was hearing, the phone burst into life, booming out voice commands after he inadvertently bumped it, but he couldn’t find out how to turn it off. Having made the rules about the use of mobile phones in his court he had no alternative but to fine himself US$25 (£16). As he said “I don’t take excuses from anyone else. I set the bar high because cellphones are a distraction so I must take the consequences!”
Keeping to matters relating to the law, we then examined the case of the Australian woman convicted of assaulting a police officer with a pram and a quiche! Her plea that she didn’t have room to move and that she had been obliged to drop the quiche was not accepted as the judge ruled that photographs of the incident clearly showed that she didn’t have to ram the officer with the pram and that furthermore the quiche had been powerfully hurled at him. It seems likely that “the book” will now be thrown at her. And no, her name was not Lorraine.
OK see you next week.
