Wintac 2011

Explorer Scouts from all over the county left the warmth and comfort of their homes behind them this weekend to take part in Wintac 2011, Essex scout’s largest winter activity camp.

More than 500 excitable young Bear Grylls wannabes stepped out into the mist for outdoor fun and shenanigans with their mates.

I went along as a Leader for the Brentwood group and spent the weekend supplying youngsters aged 14-18 with hot meals so they could roam freely around the site and enjoy a variety of physical challenges.

The event was held at Thriftwood campsite, which occupies 76 acres of picturesque woodland in Brentwood.

Qualified instructors led a variety of adventurous daytime activities including rock climbing, abseiling, archery, ice climbing, an assault course, pedal go-karts, a dry toboggan run, a mobile planetarium, rifle shooting, caving, water zorbing, inflatables and sports competitions.

I recorded a few interviews with people who attended and I played them out on last night’s show.

Next sunday my guest will be Martin Hamilton, Group Scout Leader at Hutton (All Saints) scout group. We will be talking about what scouting is all about and how anyone interested can get involved.
