Phoenix FM interview with Alex and Fiachra 06-05-2006

Back to the Water Rats in Kings Cross for the latest fundraiser from London-based charity the Aisling Return To Ireland Project. Former A House frontman Dave Couse is playing a gig in support with his new band, Couse and the Impossible.

I managed to speak not just to Dave, in the busy Lucas Arms pub over the road, but also to Alex and Fiachra, two of the organisers of the event, in the even busier Water Rats pub itself. Definitely our kind of interviews!

Dave was very kind to have a chat with us about what he’s been doing over the last few years. It’s good to see that one of the great songwriters of the 1990s is back with some new material, even better to see him play it in London, and it’s fantastic to find out that, along with the rest of the guys in the band, he’s a thoroughly nice bloke even though you’ve gone to the pub and interrupted their dinner!

Since A House split in 1997, Dave has been involved in a number of projects which didn’t see the light of day, but a first solo album, “Genes”, was released in 2003, followed up by “The World Should Know” from the new band he has put together, Couse and the Impossible. They’ve already created a storm in their native Ireland, with two nominations in the 2006 Meteor Awards (the Irish equivalent of the Brits) for best male and best album.

If you liked the previous A House material you’ll love the new offerings, which aren’t a great shift from the songs that were written and played by Couse in the 90s. It’s hoped that UK and worldwide releases will soon follow.

Saturday night’s show itself was fantastic. The new songs mixed perfectly well with half a dozen old A House songs which sounded as fresh today as they did when they were first written 15-20 years ago. Their indie classic “Endless Art” was even updated for 2006, the original names in the song being replaced by a host of others, including Joe Strummer, Mick Ronson, Hunter S Thompson, Dusty Springfield, George Harrison and Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes which seemed to stick in the memory for some reason!

Having last seen Dave Couse grace a stage in London in 1994, I’m hoping it’s not going to be 12 years before I see it again.
