Do you live and/or go to school in the Brentwood & Billericay area?
Do you play a classical instrument, or sing in a classical style?
Do you love being a musician?
Would you like to perform live on the radio?

If so, then YOU could be Phoenix 98FM's Young Classical Musician 2009.

Phoenix FM is launching its own competition to showcase the tons of talent we have in our area, and this is how you can take part.

You can register online HERE to take part in the Finals evening to be held at Brentwood Theatre on Saturday 26th September 2009 at 7pm

You will be performing to an audience at the Theatre and you will receive valuable advice from our 2009 judges who are all professional musicians.
They are:

Michael Frith (Lecturer in Music, Middlesex University)
Philippa Penkett (Chelmsford Competitive Music Festival)
Benjamin Grosvenor (International Performer and winner of 2004 BBC Young Musician Keyboard Award)

There will be prizes for winning performances, and there will be the chance to play live on your local radio station, Phoenix 98FM on one of our classical music shows.

You can enter any of the following categories:

Age 11-14
Solo Strings (Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Acoustic guitar)
Solo Woodwind (Flute, Picolo, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Cor Anglais)
Solo Brass (Trumpet, Cornet, Tuba, Trombone)
Solo Piano
Solo Voice (Musical Theatre items are acceptable)

Age 15 - 18
Solo Strings (Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Acoustic guitar)
Solo Woodwind (Flute, Picolo, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Cor Anglais)
Solo Brass (Trumpet, Cornet, Tuba, Trombone)
Solo Piano
Solo Voice (Musical Theatre items are acceptable)

Ensembles (up to 5 musicians of any age on any combination of instruments/voices)

Secondary School Choirs (up to 25 singers) This should be in at least 2 parts.

Each performance should be made up of piece(s) that total between 5 and 8 minutes.
We are providing an accompanist, and we can rehearse with you before the day. Just say 'yes' to the 'Do you need an accompanist?' box below on the online application form below if you need one.

Please note:

School Choir entries will be by a separate application form delivered to schools later in May, or via email.

To cover our costs (Phoenix FM is a not-for-profit community organisation), solo entries will be charged at £2, Ensembles will be charged £4 and school choirs will be charged £10 to enter - this is payable at the audition day on a Saturday early in September - the venue is yet to be confirmed. Please note that school choirs will ONLY perform at the Finals night at the Brentwood Theatre.



Phoenix FM Young Classical Musician 2009

REGULATIONS & INFORMATION

ELIGIBILITY: This competition is open to young classical musicians, aged between 11 and 18 years on 26th September 2009. Entrants must reside and/or attend school in the Brentwood/Billericay area.

ENTRIES can be submitted online at www.phoenixfm.com or on the official form (see reverse) from the Phoenix FM Studios, and returned by Tuesday 22nd September to Phoenix FM, The Baytree Centre, Brentwood, Essex CM14 4BX.

CATEGORIES : 1. Solo on any Orchestral instrument, piano, voice. 2. Ensembles of any five (or fewer) instruments/voices. 3. Secondary School Choirs (up to 25 singers in at least 2 parts, to perform only on Finals Night). Solo categories will be marked in two age groups; 11-14, 15-18. Ensembles may comprise performers of any age 11 – 18.

REPERTOIRE can be selected from any classical genre. Please note that Musical Theatre items are acceptable for this competition. All performances must be given on acoustic instruments. If in doubt please email your music choice to ed@phoenixfm.com

TIMINGS: Each performance should last between 3 and 8 minutes and comprise one or more pieces.

FINALS NIGHT will be held at the Brentwood Theatre on Saturday 26th September at 7.00pm. Parents and guests are invited to attend. Tickets will be available for purchase at £5 (£3 concessions) at www.phoenixfm.com, by contacting Phoenix FM on 01277 849929, or from the Phoenix FM Studios at The Baytree Centre, Brentwood.

An ACCOMPANIST will be available, but competitors may bring their own. If an official accompanist is required , we will make arrangements for you to rehearse together at least once before the Finals night.

ENTRANCE FEE: A charge of £2 for each entry will be made on the Finals night. This is to cover our administrative costs. Phoenix FM is a Not-for-Profit organisation.

PHOTOGRAPHY, VIDEOS and SOUND RECORDING by the audience are not permitted, but the Finals Night will be sound recorded for future broadcast by Phoenix FM.

PHOTOCOPIES: Competitors are reminded that it is illegal to reproduce copyright material for use in performance, but you will be required to supply a copy for adjudicators’ use, which, if a photocopy, will be destroyed after use, in line with regulation.

ADJUDICATORS’ DECISION is final, and a written comments sheet will be provided.


PERSONAL DATA: Phoenix FM will hold personal data solely for the purposes of running the competition.
