He's Not The Master of The Universe : Saturday the 14th of April's Show

Master of the Universe, but not Master of the CD Player.
Show 3 and I’m getting what I think of as the right balance between new and old. It’s certainly a great excuse for me to dust off the old classics and give them some air. I suppose having a prog rock radio show gives me a chance to be a little self indigent every now and then, though to be fair, the Genesis track was a birthday request. I haven’t played the Wind and Wuthering album in over a year and it was great to hear it again, and also to realise why I fell in love with it the first time round. Okay, so what did I play in this show? Here’s the list:
Artist : Album : Track
The Third Ending : The Third Ending : Eleven
Genesis : Wind and Wuthering : Afterglow
The Third Ending : The Third Ending : Can You Hear Me?
Hawkwind : In Search of Space : Master of the Universe
Devin Townsend : Ocean Machine : Funeral
Mostly Autumn : The Last Bright Light : Mother Nature
Umphrey's McGee : Safety In Numbers : Believe the Lie
Camel : Moonmadness : Song Within a Song
Porcupine Tree : Voyage 34 : Phase 1
IQ : The Seventh House : The Wrong Side of Weird
Neal Morse : Sola Scriptura : The Conflict
Any new material that I get sits on my MP3 player for about a week and gets a serious playing when I’m travelling about, and I clock up just under 4,000 miles a month on average! So, when The Third Ending hit my ears it was a shock to the system. I found it very hard to listen to anything else for the week as I kept returning time and again to their new album, named in the grand tradition of debut albums, The Third Ending. I haven’t been this enamoured of a new album since Frost*’s album MillionTown landed on my doormat. Which reminds me, I must play some of Frost* on the show.
It seems to be a bit of a habit now but the gremlins gave me a good hiding again this week. I put on Hawkind’s album In Search Of Space, cued the Master of the Universe track up, turned on the mic and gave the intro to it, pressed the play button and ... nothing! I looked over at it and it wasn’t playing! The CD player decided it couldn’t read the album, so it was a quick whip it out and whip it in to another player, which did read it okay and off it went. Phew! I could do without these moments of graceless silence to go out. I am certainly not a Master of the Universe, am I, eh?
A bit of mini news: A batch of new releases hit my door mat last week and they’re currently now sitting in my MP3 player, getting some great responses from me, by the way! I have the pre-release promos of the new Beardfish album and the new Kiapa album, and both are getting more than their fair share of my playing time. So much so that the soon to be released Planet X album and Devin Townsend’s exotic new one haven’t had a chance with me just yet. It’s a tough old job, but someone’s got to do it! I think I’ve got the tracks sorted out for playing on next week’s show so, if you want to hear some excellent music before it hits the high street, make sure you tune in.
Speaking of tuning in, do you fancy getting involved? I’m looking for three people to submit material to the show as “special correspondents”. What I’m looking for is:
- New Releases Correspondent
- Gig Guide Correspondent
- Prog News Correspondent
Each week I’m going to read out what’s happening in the world of prog rock so, if you’re interested, drop me a line and I’ll give you all the details of what I’m looking for.
Anyway, until next time, it’s bye from me.
