SATURDAY PITSTOP WITH ALLEN FORD - 24.11.7

Russell Quirk, councillor for the Brentwood ward including William Hunter Way and chairman of planning, came on air to explain why he hopes development plans for the site will be redrawn. Coun Quirk and other Brentwood Council representatives told developers Halladale on Monday that their proposals were too modern and too much for the current car park. "We're not after a stark, ultra modern facade in contrast due to its dominance to neighbours, but one that is traditional and characterful," said the councillor. Now Halladale must decide whether to pursue current plans for a six-screen cinema, four shops, 14 flats and a 650-space multi-storey car park or withdraw the application lodged last month. In the second hour of the show, to mark Billericay's Christmas lights switch on today, the town's cryer Jim Shrub announced the event in style. Ringing his bell and announcing his cry in traditional "oh ye" manner, Jim invited townsfolk to join Father Christmas for the 4pm ceremony.
