Shenfield High School head John Fairhurst made a pitstop on Phoenix FM this morning and described life at the 1,520-pupil comprehensive in Alexander Lane, Shenfield.
Illustrating the school's success is the rise in pupil numbers - up from 900 in 1995. Today 110 teachers and 65 support staff run Shenfield High.
John explained Shenfield High School's policy on single sex classes, with boys and girls separated for around half of their total tuition time in school.
His music choices were REM's Everybody Hurts and Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits.
During John's interview the Royal British Youth Band Brentwood played to mark another of today's Saturday Pitstop highlights.
Fellow Phoenix FM presenter Paul Coogan volunteered to have his head shaved in aid of the Royal British Legion after 18 months of growing his locks.
Band leader John Wyndham, also a barber, cut off Paul's hair live on air - with pictures bemaed to webcam viewers watching phoenixfm.com
