Body Talk - 9th October

My guest this week  was Alan Murray talking about health foods and whole foods. Whole foods are foods that are unprocessed and unrefined, or processed and refined as little as possible before being consumed. Alan explained that health foods fall into the general category of anything which is classed as being beneficial for the body, which can include processed or refined foods.

Health foods tend to go in and out of fashion. Alan can often predict when sales of a certain type of food are going to increase, depending on the latest diet craze. At the moment goji berries are hitting the headlines. They come from the Himalayas and contain 19 amino acids, the building blocks of protein. Linseed or flaxseed is also popular as it's a good source of magnesium, and may help to keep cholesterol levels down. Apricots are also good for healthy skin and eyes. Pumpkin seeds are good for general health, containing phosphorous, magnesium and vitamin B. Sunflower seeds contain beneficial antioxidants.

Alan was full of information on all the benfits of many different foods, too many to list here, but if you would like further information on health foods, then email me and I can pass your questions on to Alan.
