The Mixtape - 6 October 2007

On tonight's show we played out the session recorded for Phoenix FM by Mama Shamone, and also two tracks from Canvey band and Phoenix friends The Dirty Fairies.

Following on the 1990 thing last week, I played 4 little-heard songs from 1991 this week. The first was You by a band called 5:30 (try searching for that on Google). They were a baggy outfit (try searching for that on ... etc) who released one excellent album, "Bed". After that we played a song from one of the best named bands of the day, Fishmonkeyman, a band who carried on making records long after the major label money had gone.

Then we had a Rolling Stones cover from a psychedelic outfit, World of Twist, who split up soon after the release of their debut album in that year. The lead singer, Tony Ogden, passed away rather untimely a year ago at the age of 44, and also featured Jamie Fry (Martin Fry out of ABC's brother) and sometime Jesus and Mary Chain drummer, Nick Sanderson. The latter two went on to form the awesome late 90s glam stompers Earl Brutus with one of the Joboxers who had spent over 10 years in the musical wilderness!

The last song came from Runrig and the massive selling title track of An Cuibhle Mor (The Big Wheel), an album sung mostly in English but with a couple of songs in Scots Gaelic. The album only just missed reaching no 1.

And we played:
