SATURDAY PITSTOP WITH ALLEN FORD – 6.10.7
Jackie Warren, volunteer manager for Victim Support Essex, came on Phoenix FM’s Saturday Pitstop show with Allen Ford as the service extended opening hours and upped the amount of phone contact with victims.
Victim Support started in the 1970s when it was realised that, while criminals were supported by the probation service, no equivalent facility for their victims. Most Victim Support clients are referred by the police and are now from this week phoned straightaway by Victim Support. Previously contact was a mix of phone calls and letters.
Office hours have also been increased, so Victim Support’s Ingatestone base is now manned between 8am and 8pm. From there around 25 staff manage a volunteer team of over 100.
Jackie and colleagues recruit, train and oversee all Victim Support volunteers, working either on the community side with victims of crime or on the witness service, which accompanies them to court if they’re asked to testify.
Volunteers can be of any age or experience level. Those interested should contact Victim Support Essex on 0845 456 5995 or by emailing essex@vse.org.uk
Jackie’s chosen music choices played out on the show were George Michael: Careless Whisper; In the air tonight by Phil Collins; and The Muse: Supermassive black hole
